The short answer: Permanent lights cost far more up front. Two permanent-lighting makers put them at $18 to $35 per linear foot installed, with typical jobs of $2,500 to $6,800. A cost-estimate site puts a seasonal pro install at $250 to $650, average $450. The makers' claim that permanent pays off in 2 to 4 years is unverified: our own math shows roughly 2 to 15 years depending on the numbers you use.
Safety first. Use only lights and cords rated for outdoor use, plug them into a GFCI-protected outlet, keep ladders and light strands at least 10 feet from overhead power lines, and have a helper. Hire a licensed electrician for any wiring or new outlet. See our safety guide. This reminder is ours; the sourced details are on that page.

Trimlight and JellyFish Lighting sell permanent systems, so their figures are promotional and not independently verified. Fixr is a cost-estimate site, updated January 31, 2025, and its page gives a second range in its FAQ ($800 to $1,500) that does not match its main figures.

Does permanent pay off? Our arithmetic

Trimlight claims permanent systems often break even in two to four years and says seasonal installs cost $600 to over $1,200 per year, but its own five-year table uses $300 to over $1,000 per year. Those do not match, so we ran our own numbers using only the sourced figures. Years to equal, rounded:

Permanent priceIf seasonal is $450 a year (Fixr average)If seasonal is $1,200 a year (Trimlight's high figure)
$2,500 (low end of a front roofline)5.6 years2.1 years
$4,600 (JellyFish average)10.2 years3.8 years
$6,800 (high end of a front roofline)15.1 years5.7 years

Our division, not a source's claim. It ignores controller replacement, electricity, repairs and the fact that the two services may light different amounts of house. Fixr's $450 is for a 1,500 sq. ft. home. Get quotes for your own house.

Common questions

How much do permanent Christmas lights cost?

Trimlight says $18 to $35 per linear foot installed, and JellyFish Lighting says $25 to $35. Both sell permanent systems, so treat the figures as marketing-informed estimates. Typical totals are $2,500 to $6,800 for a front roofline (Trimlight).

Are permanent Christmas lights worth it?

It depends on your roofline and how much you pay each year for seasonal lights. Our math using sourced figures gives a break-even of roughly 2 to 15 years. Get written quotes for your home.

Can I install permanent Christmas lights myself?

JellyFish says a DIY option exists at a lower price but gives no figure and recommends a pro. Do not do electrical work yourself. Hire a licensed electrician for any new outlet or wiring.
