The short answer: Do not drive nails into stucco: it can crack and the nails will not hold. The safest start is to hang lights from the roof edge, gutters or wood trim. For the wall itself, use outdoor-rated adhesive clips on clean, dry stucco. Never drill or nail into EIFS (foam-backed synthetic stucco), because holes can let water behind it.
Safety first. Use only lights and cords rated for outdoor use, plug them into a GFCI-protected outlet, keep ladders and light strands at least 10 feet from overhead power lines, and have a helper. Hire a licensed electrician for any wiring or new outlet. See our safety guide. This reminder is ours; the sourced details are on that page.

First: what kind of stucco do you have?

If you are not sure which you have, ask the builder, a stucco contractor or a home inspector (our advice). Treat it as EIFS until you know.

Best first choice: skip the wall

Hunker suggests hanging lights from the roof edge, gutters, window and door trim, fascia boards, or wood, vinyl or aluminum soffits. Ware Landscaping lists gutter or roof clips, which avoid wall contact, and parapet clips that grip a cap or ledge on stucco parapets and flat roofs. See gutters and without gutters.

Methods for the wall

MethodWhat the source saysCaution
Adhesive clipsWare Landscaping: clean with alcohol, press firmly and space clips 1 to 2 feet apart. Use outdoor-rated clips.Needs surface temperatures above roughly 50°F. The post gives both a 1-hour and a 24-hour cure time, so follow your product's package.
Hot-melt glueFamily Handyman: fine for light items; removal is easy. Hunker: hold the string against the wall 20 to 30 seconds, glue about every 18 inches, remove by warming the glue.Hunker: do not glue to painted stucco, because the paint will blister and peel. Avoid on EIFS. Ware: it can remove stucco when pulled off.
Clips fixed with construction adhesiveFamily Handyman: for a long-term setup.Harder to remove, so only for clips you will leave in place.
Stucco duct tapeFamily Handyman: UV-resistant, waterproof tape made for textured stucco.Ware: tape breaks down in wet or cold conditions. Plain duct tape and double-sided tape do not stick well.
Adhesive strips or hooksFamily Handyman: work best on smooth stucco.Outdoor adhesive hooks hold only about 5 lbs, and smooth stucco can resist adhesive.
Nails into wood trimFamily Handyman: hang string between nails driven into wood trim at corners or the overhang.Never nail directly into stucco. For light strands, a nail through the cord is still a problem (South Carolina's fire safety program), so use a clip on the trim.
Stucco screws or anchorsFamily Handyman: about 1.5 inch screws or plastic anchors in a pilot hole made with a masonry bit.Risk of cracks. Seal the hole with silicone caulk. Not for EIFS. Ware: last resort for permanent installs.

Steps for adhesive clips

  1. Pick a dry day above about 50°F (Ware Landscaping).
  2. Clean the stucco with alcohol so the adhesive can bond.
  3. Press each clip firmly, 1 to 2 feet apart, and let it cure as the package says.
  4. Test every strand on the ground first (Public Storage), then set the lights into the clips.
  5. Check the clips after a rain or a cold night. Add more if lights sag.

Need clips or a hanging pole?

Clips made for the job are gentler on your gutters and cords than nails or staples. Match the clip to your gutter, shingle or trim.

Common questions

Can you hang Christmas lights on stucco?

Yes, but do not nail or screw into it. Family Handyman says never to drive nails directly into stucco. Use adhesive clips, or hang lights from the roof edge, gutters or wood trim instead.

What is EIFS and why does it matter?

EIFS is synthetic stucco over foam. Ware Landscaping says never to drill or nail into EIFS because holes can let water behind it and cause hidden rot and mold. Hunker adds that hot glue heat can melt the foam.

Does hot glue damage stucco?

It can. Hunker says not to glue lights to painted stucco because the paint will blister and peel, and Ware says glue can remove stucco when pulled off. Family Handyman says removal is easy for light items. Test a hidden spot.

What are parapet clips?

Ware Landscaping says parapet clips grip the cap or ledge of a stucco parapet or flat roof, so you do not fasten into the wall.
