The short answer: A metal roofing maker says to use magnets: magnetic clips, magnetic hooks or lights with magnets built in. Do not screw into the panels (holes can leak) and do not use adhesive (it can remove paint and void warranties). Metal roofs can be slippery, so have a spotter or hire a pro.
Safety first. Use only lights and cords rated for outdoor use, plug them into a GFCI-protected outlet, keep ladders and light strands at least 10 feet from overhead power lines, and have a helper. Hire a licensed electrician for any wiring or new outlet. See our safety guide. This reminder is ours; the sourced details are on that page.

Our notes

Read the ladder rules first. For steep or high roofs, see hire an installer or DIY. Roofs with shingles or no gutters: without gutters.

Need clips or a hanging pole?

Clips made for the job are gentler on your gutters and cords than nails or staples. Match the clip to your gutter, shingle or trim.
